2016 Scholarships Applications and Rules

The Iowa Section IFT will be awarding scholarships to students studying food science or closely related fields in the state of Iowa.  A description for each of the scholarships is listed below.  To be considered for a scholarship, each student must be a member of the Iowa Section IFT.  Attendance at Iowa Section IFT meetings will be taken into consideration for scholarships.  You are eligible for one Iowa Section IFT scholarship award per academic degree.

Scholarship applications are due October 12th, 2016!

IOWA SECTION IFT OUTSTANDING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP (ISUS):  $500 to $1000

  • One letter of recommendation (see requirements on next page)
  • Selection emphasis on IFT participation and student related activities
  • Scholarship and coursework, career goals, extra-curricular activities, work experience and letters of recommendation will also be considered.

            NOTE: All undergraduates (including spring 2017 graduates) are eligible to apply.  One scholarship received per academic degree.

IOWA SECTION IFT OUTSTANDING GRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP (ISGS):  $500 to $1000

  • One letter of recommendation (see requirements on below)
  • Selection emphasis on IFT participation and student related activities
  • Description of research for Thesis/Dissertation, scholarship and coursework, career goals, extra-curricular activities, work experience and letters of recommendation will be considered.

            NOTE: All graduate students (including spring 2017 Graduates) are eligible to apply. One scholarship received per academic degree.

IOWA FOOD INDUSTRY SCHOLARSHIP (IFIS): $500 to $1000

  • One letter of recommendation (see requirements on next page)
  • Selection emphasis on IFT participation and student related activities
  • Scholarship and coursework, career goals, extra-curricular activities, work experience and letters of recommendation will also be considered.

 ADDITIONAL Required elements for all scholarships:

  1. Student Application Form: Completed Online here.   The Application Form includes the following:

  • Resume and Transcript will be uploaded to this form.  Please have them accessible when you fill out the form.
    • Resume to include education, experience, published/presented papers, leadership positions held, awards, honors and scholarships, etc. (resume should not exceed 2 pages unless you are a PhD candidate).
    • College transcript(s): Copy of all college transcripts.  An unofficial copy is acceptable.
  • Short answer questions (3): Please fill out in the Student Profile form.

1.  What are your career goals?  What do you plan to do after graduation and why?

2.  Please list Iowa Section IFT meetings you have attended while a student at ISU.  Which meeting was most meaningful and why?

3.  The purpose of the IA Section IFT is “to support improvement of the food supply and its use through science, technology and education”.  How will an Iowa Section IFT Scholarship enable you to contribute to the IA Section purpose?

  1.  Letter of Recommendation:

  • All Scholarships only need one letter of recommendation from a faculty member or an industry member who has worked with the student. The letter should include a general appraisal of scholarship and research performance (for graduate students), extracurricular activities, work experience and character. Persons writing the letter may submit them here.

The Student Profile Form and all required element attachments (typed in English) must be submitted by noon (12:00 pm), October 12th, 2016 to: Dr. Stephanie Clark, 2312 Food Sciences Building, Iowa State University, Ames, IA, 50011, milkmade@iastate.edu.

 

SCHOLARSHIPS WILL BE AWARDED AT the November 17th, 2016 Iowa Section IFT meeting.  Meeting attendance is required to receive a scholarship.  If you would like to apply, but will not be able to make it to the meeting, please indicate this on your scholarship application with an explanation of your meeting conflict.  The scholarship committee will take the conflict into consideration.
